When China adopted the policy of reform and opening up its domestic markets to the world in 1978, the country was economically backward. The most important task was to develop the national economy. Toward that end some Chinese were allowed to seize market opportunities and become rich.
Now after thirty years of rapid economic growth, the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. This disparity between high-income and low-income groups constitutes a serious social inequality. Therefore, our government has been trying every means to solve the issue of inequality in distribution. (1)We can reduce poor people’s resent and contribute the building of society by taking measures to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor. Besides, a more just society with only a small gap between the rich and the poor will ensure a lower crime rate. And a better social environment will in turn promote economic development.
When it comes to the question of how to narrow this gap, in my opinion, the most important measure lies in an appropriate taxation policy. The tax burden on the poor should be lightened, while the rich should pay more taxes to help the poor and support the country’s development. (2)Moreover, we should build more charity organizations and more voluntary programs such as Project Hope to help the people in poor areas. Also, the wealthy eastern region can cooperate with the economically disadvantaged western region to seek for joint development. In addition, the social welfare and medical care system should be improved to guarantee poor people’s basic living standards.
As for us college students, although we don’t have much money, we can make our own contribution to solve this tricky social issue. After graduation from the college, we can choose to work in those underdeveloped regions where we are most urgently needed. With our knowledge and youthful passion, we can devote our life to the well-being of the poor and help them to lead a more prosperous life.

【评语】本篇习作作者探讨了贫富差距这个比较深刻的社会问题。首先作者简明扼要地概述了改革开放以来中国贫富差距加剧的社会现实，然后说明了缩小贫富差距的重大社会意义，并提出了一些解决这个问题的方案措施，最后，作者提出了大学生也可以为解决这个社会问题作出自己的贡献。文章针砭时弊，体现了当代大学生强烈的社会责任感。语言方面词汇和句式变化都较为丰富，显示出比较扎实的语言功底。
