Blue-ray format DVD, applying new technologies toperformance improvement, is one of the most successful successors of the current DVD products. However, its weaknesses coexist with its advantages. This essay will define blue-ray format DVD by analyzing its benefits as well as shortcomings.
Blue-ray is a kind of optical storage format developed and devoted by Sony and Phillips. Because of its usage of blue laser technology in storing and reading data, this storage format is given the name blue-ray.  
Due to applying new techniques, blue-ray format DVD holds several distinctive advantages. The main advantage of blue-ray DVD is the high audiovisual qualities it provides. The video system applied by blue-ray DVD is called HDTV which can satisfy large screens better than traditional systems. Besides this, the audio quality of blue-ray DVD is highly evaluated as well.
Apart from the technical advantages, (1)blue-ray format is also superior its arch rival on social aspects. Almost all the major studios, including Disney, Hollywood, and so forth, have publicly stated their supports for blue-ray formats.
On the contrary, the shortcoming of blue-ray products is apparent. (2)The main disadvantage to blue-ray DVD is that they are quite expensive. For instance, blue-ray players are selling at about $1,000, which is more expensive than their counterparts.
According to recent reports, blue-ray format has won the battle with HD DVD. However, how to reduce the unaffordable price is another challenge to it.
