1How was one telephone connected with another in the past?
2How is one telephone connected with another today ?
TELEPHONES
How a telephone works is a question which not everyone can answer. When you speak into the telephone, the sound waves of your voice are turned into electrical signals. The signal is sent down a pair of wires to the receiving telephone. There the electrical signal is changed back into sound.
he earliest telephones were not popular and it took a long time before people began to hire or buy them .At the befin ningit was difficult to hear people over long distances. The wires which carried the telephone conversations were thick, heavy and expensive. In those days,to make a call, you had to wind a handle at the side of your telephone. This produced enough electricity to make your call. You called the operator and told her which number you wanted. The operator connected the two numbers and made a note of the length of the telephone call and the charge.
The first telephone directory was printed in a town in the USA in 1878.It was just one piece of paper, printed on one side.In 1877 there were only 2,600 telephones in the world.By 1990there were over 300 million.
There have been great advances in telephone equipment in the last quarter of the twentieth century. For example, radio waves can be used to send telephone signals over long distances,of ten by satellite.T he problem with electrical sifnals is that they fet weaker and weaker as they travel alongmetal wires. They need to be streng thened every 3-4km .Light signals, however, can travel 150 km without getting weaker, and their signal is clearer too.So now adays,in stead of using metal wires to send electrical signals, very thin flass pipes, about 1mm wide, are used to send light signals.
A person\'s voice is changed into electrical signals. These electrical signals are turned into light signals which are sent down the thin“pipe”.At the other end,the light sifnals are received and changed back into electrical signals and finally sound.
I.You will hear five dialogues and fivequestions.Choose the correct answer toeach question. Each dialogue and question will be read only once.
1.F:Have you finished that report yet?
M:Yes.I typed it and made copies for everyone.

Q :When will the report be discussed?
2.F:Would you like to go to the cinema tonight?

M:Yeah.O K.Let\'s go and see that.
Q :What film are they going to see?
3.F:Please pay attention.You\'re making a lot of careless mistakes.
M:I\'m sorry.I just don\'t understand biology.
F:Well,if you would study more and doyour homework every day and stay awake in
class,I think you would start to understand biology.
Q :What\'s relation ship between the speakers?
4.M:What\'s the best way to down town ?
F:If you\'re in a hurry,you should take a taxi.But it\'s very expensive.

Q :What do we learn from the conversation?
II.You will hear people talking in five different situations. For questions1—5y ou\'ll have to choose the best answer from A,B or C.The talk will be read twice.
1.Female:Hi John, how was your holiday? You look really brown.
Male:Yes,you know I just love lazing around on the beach.I was a bit worried because it could be,you know, unbearably hot there sometimes, but we obviously went at the right time.
Female:Did you do any sightseeing?
Male:I couldn\'t be bothered, besides, allthe excursions from the hotel cost a fortune.I wasn\'t paying that.It was just nice getting away from work, you know.It made a change not to be surrounded by people all wanting you to do something immediately. You should gothere,you\'d like it.
2.I know how upset we all are about theterrible oil spill on our wonderful localbeach....You smell the oil before you get to the seafront, and then you seeit,dark,green,brown...and all the birds coated in it....Now,people are trying to be helpful by going to the beach and rescuing and cleaning some birds. This is wonderful, but I\'mafraid,so many people walking about is actually in terfering with the cleaning of the beach.There\'ll be plenty of need for volunteers later,I\'m told, but for the time being if you want tohelp, the messag eis, please let the specialists take care of things.
3.Inter viewer :How did you discover the book?
Jim:Well,I\'d seen the film as a young man-it actually took America by storm if you remember -and I thought...most films are ...can add a certain charm or attraction to a story...so I didn\'t expect the book to be as good as the film .I still can\'t believe how wrong I was...I loved it...and I really can\'t praise it enough.
4.Reporter:So,the rumour is that you\'ve decided to drop out of international competitions next year?
Male:Well, when you get to your early thirties most people in this business feelit\'stime to be thinking of something new-like becoming a coach, but what it\'s really all aboutis that I\'ve spent the past fifteen years living out of a suitcase.Apart from a slight shoulder in jury I got last year I feel I\'ve been lucky up to now and so I feel I ought to quit while I\'mahead and maybe change direction completely.
5.Well,the chemist gave me some different tablets, because the ones the doctor gave me were making me feel ill.But the thingis, she said I should try and rest my wrist as much aspossible. But I just don\'t think they\'ll be prepared to give me any time off work. You know how busy we get this time of year.
III.You will hear five stud ents talking about travelling around Europe using an Inter-Rail ticket. The ticket allows people under the age of twenty-six to travel wherever they want within Europe for one month. For questions 1—5 you\'ll have tochoose which of the opinions of A-F speakers express are ture or false.Useeachletter only once. There is one extra letter which you won\'t need to use.The passage will be read twice.
Speaker One:I went by Inter-Rail this summer witha group of friends from universities.I think it worked very well, although a few of them said they\'d never do it again-I guess it wasn\'t quite like they thought it was going to be -not as comfortable probably.Weusually slept in hostels or on the train so we were completely exhausted but I think we hada great time.Next year I\'ll see if I can perhaps visit fewer places and not get so worn out.
Speaker Two:I travelled about 6,000kilometres in four weeks with a couple of friends from colleges. We spent weeks planning out the route and all the places we were intending to go to.Would I do it again?Well,I\'dhave to think carefully about that but,on the wholethe trip was good for me as I was the official translator, which was great asI\'m normally a bitshy of talking to people I don\'t know.On the last night of the holiday they treated me to areally expensive meal for helping them out.It was terrific!
Speaker Three:Well,I guess I had a good time now I look back on it,and I saw eight countries in four weeks.Everything went well but I think that from now on I\'ll probablychoose to do something else.I want to meet local people rather than just people who work for the train service!I did get to know quite a few other English and American students and they were great but it didn\'t do much for my French and German.
Speaker Four :I think it\'s definitely the best way of getting around Europe even though you have to spend money on the Inter -Rail ticket before you leave.I have a friend who hitch -hikes and he says that\'s the only way to travel because it\'s free and you see more in teresting pleaces. But I knew I could jump on a train wherever I wanted inthe morning ,while he would still be standing in the rain hoping for a lift.So all in all Ithink I got thebetter deal, especially as I could take the night train and save on hotel bills.
Speaker Five:I\'ve done it quite a few times now and I\'m used to the kind of problem sthat arise -like having to sleep in a park because the train arrived too late for me to get ahostel bed,and trying to keep to a tight budget. The mistake people often make is to just get off at the tourist spots.Try gettingoff the train at the little villages like I do.They\'re usually fascinating and the people are friendlier too.Even if they don\'t understand your miserable attempt at their language they stillsmile and nod.
