41. So please my lord the Duke and all thecourt,
To quit thefine for one half of his goods;
I am content, so he will let me have
The other halfin use, to render it
Upon his deathunto the gentleman
That latelystole his daughter-
Two thingsprovided more: that, for this favor,
He presentlybecome a Christian;
Questions:
A. What is the titleof the play from which the excerpt is taken? Who is the author?
B. What does“I” and “he” respectively refer to in the third line?
C. What is yourcomment on this play?
答案:
1. This excerpt is taken from TheMerchant of Venice written by William Shakespeare.
2. “I” refers to Antonio; “he” refers toShylock.
3. The fourth act is the climax of theplay. It took place in the court where Shylock claims a pound of flesh fromAntonio. The pound of flesh lends itself to multiple interpretations: itemerges as a metaphor for two of the play’s closest relationships, but alsocalls attention to Shylock’s inflexible adherence to the law. Lastly, the poundof flesh is a constant reminder of the rigidity of Shylock’s world, wherenumerical calculations are used to evaluate even the most serious ofsituations. While other characters measure their emotions with long metaphorsand words, Shylock measures everything in far more prosaic and numericalquantities.
42. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man inpossession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. However little knownthe feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed inthe minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightfulproperty of some one or other of their daughters.
Questions:
A. What is thetitle of the novel from which the excerpt is taken? Who is the author?
B. What is theauthor’s main literary concern?
C. What is thestyle of this novel?
答案:
1.The excerpt is taken from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
2. The opening line of the novel announces: “It is a truthuniversally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortunemust be in want of a wife.” This sets marriage as a central subject for thenovel generally. Marriage becomes an economic rather than social activity. Austen’scomplex sketching of different marriages ultimately allows readers to questionwhat forms of alliance are desirable, especially when it comes to privilegingeconomic, sexual, companionate attraction.
3. The novel employs the narrative technique of free indirectspeech, which has been defined as “the free representation of a character’sspeech, by which one means, not words actually spoken by a character, but thewords that typify the character’s thoughts, or the way the character wouldthink or speak, if she thought or spoke”. Austen creates her characters with afully developed personalities and unique voices. Though Darcy and Bennet arevery alike, they are also immensely different.
43.Then took the other, as just as fair,
And havingperhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as forthat the passing there
Had worn themreally about the same.
Questions:
A. What is thetitle of the poem from which the stanza is taken? Who is the author?
B. What does“it was grassy and wanted wear” in the third line mean?
C. What doesthe poet want to tell the reader in this meditative poem?
答案:
1. The stanza is taken from “The Road Not Taken” written byRobert Frost.
2. “Grassy” and “wanted wear” imply that the second road is rarelytaken by people and therefore covered with dense grass. Though few people havetaken the road, it may lead to beautiful sceneries, or it may be filled withdanger and challenges. Unless you have a try by yourself, you could never knowwhat a place it will lead to.
3. This poem is about the human tendency to look back and attributeblame to minor events in one’s life, or to attribute more meaning to thingsthan they may deserve. In 1961, Frost commented that “The Road Not Taken” is “atricky poem, very tricky” implying that people generally misinterpret this poemas evidence of the benefit of free thinking and not following the crowd, whileFrost’s intention was to comment about indecision and people finding meaning ininconsequential decisions.
44. And now Carrie had attained that which in thebeginning seemed life’s object, or, at least, such fraction of it as humanbeings ever attain of their original desires...” Applause there was, andpublicity-once faroff, essential things, but now grown trivial and indifferent. Beauty also-her type of loveliness-and yet she was lonely. Inher rocking-chair she sat, when not otherwise engaged-singing and dreaming.
Questions:
A. What is thetitle of the novel from which the excerpt is taken? Who is the author?
B. What is the core of American valuesaccording to the author?
C. What doesthe underlined sentence mean?
答案:
1. This excerpt is taken from SisterCarrie written by TheodoreDreiser.
2. From the first novel Sister Carrie on, Dreiser set himselfto project the American values for what he had found them to be—materialistic to the core.Living in such a society with such a value system, the human individual isobsessed with a never-ending, yet meaningless search for satisfaction of his desires. Oneof the desires is for money which was a motivating purpose of life in theUnited States in the late 19th century. In Sister Carrie, there is notone character whose status is not determined economically.
3. This excerpt depicts the end of the story when Carrie has alreadyachieved stardom. She has finally obtained what she had strived for. Though shehas both wealth and status, she finds that money and fame do not satisfy herlongings or bring her happiness and that nothing will. She now feels lonely andlost, beguiling her life by singing and dreaming.
III. Questions andAnswers (24 points in all, 6 for each)
Give a brief answer to each of the following questions inEnglish. Write your answers in the corresponding space on the answer sheet.
45. What significant contribution has Wordsworth made to Englishpoetry?
答案:
WilliamWordsworth’s revolutionary techniques in poetry contributed significantly tothe creation of the poetic form known as prose poetry. Wordsworth’s fresh and innovativework has influenced poets to contemporary times and shaped the history ofpoetry over the last two hundred years. One example supporting Wordsworth’scontribution to the development of prose poetry is his use of the longsentence. By choosing not to rhyme in some of his works, Wordsworth gainedgreater syntactical freedom. The significant idea that the form of the poemshould reflect the experience is marked by Wordsworth's short poems. Toexperience the uniqueness in “every moment” enforces Wordsworth’s desire forirregular forms. This idea of the uniqueness of experience helped the poet toturn away from the conventional techniques of rhyme and meter, and to develop apersonal style that logically led to the creation of the poetic genres of free verseand prose poetry.
46. What is your comment on The Waste Land by Eliotin terms of the themes and the mood?
答案:
The WasteLand, Eliot’s first long philosophical poem, cannow be read simply as it was written, as a poem of radical doubt and negation, urging that every human desire be stilled except the desire for self-surrender,for restraint, and for peace. Compared with the longing expressed in laterpoems for the “eyes” and the “birth,” the “coming” and “the Lady”, the hopeheld out in The Waste Land is a negative one. It depicts thedisintegration of all European cities after the First World War and the poem’sculminating vision of a new Carthaginiancollapse, imagined from the vantage point of India’s holy men. A passagecanceled in the manuscript momentarily suggested that the ideal city, foreverunrealizable on earth, might be found in another world, but the reference waspurely sardonic. Nowhere in the poem can one find convincing allusions to anyexistence in another world, much less to St. Augustine’s vision ofinterpenetration between the City of God and the City of Man in this world.
47.How does Hawthorne prove himself to be one of the best symbolists?
答案:
Hawthorne is amaster of symbolism. Take The Scarlet Letter as an example: The letter “A”is full of symbolic meanings and becomes the focus of discussion. It can beinterpreted as adultery, able, angle or Adam. When Hester comes back to NewEngland, Nathaniel Hawthorne comments upon her return with this sentence: she “resumedthe symbol of which we have related so dark a tale.” The letter, as a “symbol”,is thus the central subject of the book. The reader is thus invited to considerthe whole story as a progressive uncovering of the “truth” of a symbol thatconstitutes one of the most enigmatic elements of American literature. Hisshort stories such as “The Young Goodman Brown” and “The Minister’s Black Veil”also overflow with symbolism. In a word, symbolism is one of the artisticfeatures of Hawthorne’s writings.
48. How is symbolism reflected in Moby Dick, the first American prose epicby Herman Melville?
答案:
Moby Dick is a novel overflown with symbols. The white whale is one of thebest-known symbols in American literature. What it represents depends entirelyon who is noticing. To Starbuck, Moby Dick is just another whale, except thathe is more dangerous. Early in the novel, Starbuck challenges Ahab’s motivesfor altering the ship’s mission, from accumulating oil to killing the whitewhale. To some, the white whale is a myth. To others, he is immortal. However,to Ahab, he sees the inscrutable power as evil. He wants to kill the whale inorder to reach the force. Ahab seems to want to be a God. Another symbol is Queequeg’s coffin: the symbolismof the coffin changes as the novel proceeds. Initially, it represents thecoming death. It then represents ongoing life when it becomes Queequeg’s seachest after he decides not to die. at the end of the story, the coffin servesas an ark and saves Ishmael’s life.
IV. Topic Discussion (20points in all, 10 for each)
Write no lessthan 150 words on each of the following topics in English in the correspondingspace on the answer sheet.
49. Briefly discuss the difference between Dickens’ early worksand later works.
答案:
The first decade of Dickens’literary career, was a period of constant experimentation. He had yet toachieve the consistency of attitude toward his material which would enable himto coordinate his storytelling skills in unified imaginative creations. Thisall-important stage in his development came during the 1840s with the deepeningof his social consciousness. Dombey and Son is the first of Dickens’ novels to projecta unitary view of society in terms of class structure. The relevance of thisview to the novelist’s social criticism has been often remarked; but lessattention has been paid to its artistic implications, particularly as affectingthe organization of his narratives. Dombey and Son,like its predecessors, has the breadth of focus that was the heritage of thepicaresque tradition; but here the action is more purposefully controlled byits setting amidst the conditions of contemporary life. In contrast to earlier works, the openingscenes of the later novels exhibit a confident artistry, further indicative ofscrupulous forethought. They not only announce leading themes for subsequentdevelopment, but also immediately and dramatically enlist the reader’s interestin series of events. Our Mutual Friend is his representative work then.It reflects the darkness of the society and desperation of the author.
50.Discuss the local color reflected in Mark Twain’s novels.
答案:
Local color isa style or genre of writing in the United States that gained popularity in themid to late 19th century into the early 20th century. In this style of writing, which includes both poetry and prose, the setting is particularly important andwriters often emphasize specific features such as dialect, customs, history, and landscape, of a particular region. Mark Twain is considered the father ofAmerican local colorism because his writings are often set in Mississippi, theplace where he was brought up and familiar with. Twain depicted social lifethrough descriptions of local places and people he knew best and believed that “themost valuable capital, or culture, or education usable in the building ofnovels is personal experience.” In addition, he uses a lot of dialects in hisworks in order to render the story vivid and humorous. Twain wrote in hisunpretentious, colloquial, and poetic style. He used vernacular language, dialect with spelling representing pronunciation. Adventures of HuckleberryFinn displays the major achievements of hisart. Twain’s local colorism and his plain language have exertedgreat influence upon later writers like Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner.
