Questions 1 to 5 arebased on the following passage.
We can see howthe product life cycle works by looking at the introduction of instant coffee. When it was introduced, most people did not like it as well as “regular”coffer, and it took several years to gain general acceptance (introductionstage). At one point, though, instant coffee grew rapidly in popularity, andmany brands were introduced (stage of rapid growth). After a while peoplebecame attached to one brand and sales leveled off (stage of maturity). Saleswent into a slight decline when freeze-dried coffees were introduced (stage ofdecline).
The importanceof the product life cycle to marketers is this: different stages in the productlife cycle call for different strategies. The goal is to extend product life sothat sales and profits do not decline. One strategy is called marketmodification. It means that marking managers look for new users and marketsections. Did you know, for example, that the backpacks that so many studentscarry today were originally designed for the military?
Marketmodification also means searching for increased usage among resent customers orgoing for a different market, such as senior citizens. A marketer mayre-position the product to appeal to new market sections.
Another productextension strategy is called product modification. It involves changing productquality, features, or style to attract new users or more usage from presentusers. American auto manufacturers are using quality improvement as one way torecapture world markets. Note, also, how auto manufacturers once changed stylesdramatically from year to year to keep demand from falling.

Passage Two
Questions 6 to 10 arebased on the following passage.
Play is theprincipal business of childhood, and more and more in recent years research hasshown the vital importance of play in the development of a human being. Fromearliest infancy, every child needs adequate opportunity and the right materialfor play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is tosuggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of achild’s development.
In recent years research on infantdevelopment has shown the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is largelydetermined in the first three years of his life. The right play materials for ababy should be things to touch, things to listen to, and things to watch. At notime in his life will a child develop as fast as now; in the first two yearseach month brings a change in what he can do and what he needs. A baby who isencouraged and stimulated, talked to, and shown things and played with, has thebest chance of growing up successfully. There is no doubt that he right playmaterials and opportunities are of the utmost importance.
The next stage, from three to five years old, is the heyday for toys, and at this stagecuriosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made availableto the child; bricks and jigsaws and construction toys; are concerned andserious when they play, for to them play is a serious business, and through itthey are learning about the world and growing up.
By the thirdstage of play development—from five to seven or eight year—the child is atschool. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, athome or at school. The right toy at this stage can sometimes lead to the choiceof a career.
Until the age ofseven or eight, play and work mean much the same thing to a child. But oncereading has been mastered, then books and school become the main source oflearning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, but their significance haschanged—to a child of nine or ten years, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun.

Passage Three
Questions 11-15 arebased on the following passage.
The more timescientists spend designing computers the more they marvel at the human brain,Tasks that baffle (难住) the most advanced supercomputer—recognizing a face, reading ahandwritten note—are child’s play for the 3-pound organ. Most important, unlikeany conventional computer, the brain can learn from its mistakes. Researchershave tried for years to program computers to imitate the brain’s abilities, butwithout success. Now a growing number of designers believe they have theanswer: if a computer is to function more like a person and less like anover-grown calculator it must be built more like a brain, which distributesinformation across a vast interconnected web of nerve cells, or neurons.
Conventionalcomputers function by following a chainlike sequence of detailed instructions.Although very fast, their processors can perform only once task at a time. Thisapproach works best in solving problems that can be broken down into simplerlogical pieces. The processors in a neural-network computer, by contrast, forma network much like the nerve cells in the brain. Since these artificialneurons are interconnected, they can share information and perform tasks at thesame time. This two-dimensional approach works best at recognizing patterns.
Instead ofprogramming a neural-network computer to make decisions, its maker trains it torecognize patterns in any solution to problem by repeatedly feeding examples tothe machine.
Neural networkscome in all shapes and sizes. Until now most existed as software simulations(模拟品) because redesigningcomputer chips took a lot of time and money. By experimenting with differentapproaches through software rather than hardware, scientists have been able toavoid costly mistakes.
11. It can be inferred from the firstparagraph that the most advanced supercomputer ______.
A) canrecognize a face and read a handwritten note
B) can learnfrom its mistakes
C) weights only3 pounds
D) cannot distributeinformation across an interconnected web nerve cells
12. What is NOT true of a conventionalcomputer?
A) It must beprogrammed before it works.
B) It can onlysolve one problem at a time.
C) It is goodat solving one problem at a time.
D) It is trainedto recognize patterns instead of making decisions.
13. The main feature of a neural-networkcomputer is that ______.
A) itsprocessors act as an interconnected web of neurons
B) it isprogrammed to make decisions
C) its networksare of all shapes and sizes
D) its neuronsare artificial
14. The expression “this two-dimensionalapproach” in the second paragraph refers to ______.
A) theconventional computer and the neural computer
B) makingdecisions and recognizing patterns
C) sharinginformation and performing tasks
D) the computerand the human brain
15. Scientists use software rather thanhardware in their experiments because ______.
A) it can avoidredesigning computer chips
B) it can savea lot of time and money
C) it can avoidmaking mistakes
D) it is morelike the human brain
13.A 由文中第二段“The processors in a neural-network computer, by contrast, form anetwork much like the nerve cells in the brain ”可知,神经网络计算机的不同正是由于处理器里有像人类大脑神经细胞一样的设置,而其他功能的不同也是由此引起的。
Passage Four
Questions 16 to 20 arebased on the following passage.
In a familywhere the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where manyhousehold tasks are shared to a grater or lesser extent, notions of makesuperiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks andindecision makes for equality and this in turn to further sharing. In such ahome, the growing boy and girl learn to accept equality more easily than didtheir parents more fully for participation in a world characterized bycooperation rather than by the “battle of the sexes”.
If the processgoes too far and man’s role is regarded as less important-and that has happenedin some cases-we are as badly off as before, only in reverse.
It is time toreassess the role of the main in the American family. We are getting a littletired of “Momism”—but we don’t want to exchange it for a “neo-Popism”. What weneed, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves apartnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of thepart men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all thecredit—nor the blame. We have almost given up saying that a women’s place is inthe home. We are beginning, however, to analyze man’s place in the home and toinsist that the does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to thehealthy development of the child.
The family is aco-operative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, becauseeach family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems.

Harmfulness of Fake Commodities
Nowadays we are not unfamiliarwith the news of fake commodities, or the harmful consequence they have broughtto our life. It is dangerous for us to ignore it, for it may cause a fatalcrisis to our society.
Why did thisphenomenon come into being within recent decades? As far as I am concerned, itshall be rooted in the corruption of modern people’s moral values. Since thevirus of money worship infects a large group in the society, people become dullabout the basic moral standard they are supposed to follow. To produce fakecommodities could be economical for the companies and surely it will bring themlarger profit. Therefore, they choose to do such a bad business.
We all areinformed of the scandal of the dairy industry in 2008. We saw the poor babieswho were poisoned by the milk they drank and the big loss in those families.Fake commodities firstly will harm the customers’ health. Secondly, it willdefinitely bring troubles to the economic market. Lastly, it will seriously rotthe society’s moral system.
None of usneeds a society where we buy nothing but fake commodities. It is of greatimportance to ban these illegal doings and create a safe market for all of us.
