Assume that China Daily has now opened a special column “society and medicine” for discussion of some controversial topics. Select ONE from the following and write a letter to the newpaper, expressing your own opinions. Use business letter format.(40 points)

Topic for argument:

(a)Should the government compel genetic testing as a prerequisite to marriage?

(b)Should the government pass a law permitting the sale of organs, such as kidneys, for medical transplants?

(c)Should lavoratory virus of SARS be personal for research or destroyed to prevent future outbreaks?

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to you to express my own opinions on genetic testing prior to marriage.
Personally, I’m strongly against government compelling genetic testing as a prerequisite to marriage. My reasons are as follows:
First of all, in terms of human rights, all men are equally endowed with the right of free choice. Therefore, it is the would-be couples who decide whether they will experience the genetic testing or not. Government should not interfere in citizens’ free choice, let alone compel them to do so.
Second, government insists genetic testing be necessary, which may be based on some rational considerations, say, it is beneficial for the sake of the next generation,or, to a larger extent, it contributes to the improvement to the whole society. However, if we take the sheerest love as a starting point, any seeming rational consideration turns pale in the presence of love, since love can conquer everything. Two inter-appealing hearts can overwhelm any difficulties, be it illness or poverty. That is where the essence of love lies in. Therefore, a man and a woman should get married so long as they love each other and other legal conditions are met.
Last but not least, would-be couples can save some money since they do not have to carry out genetic testing. This is particularly valuable for newlyweds, because any sum of money will play an important role in their newly-started marital life, the primary phase of wealth accumulation. Meanwhile, government also gains benefit from this, because the effort for genetic testing can be put into other fields, which is likely to be more effective. A win-win project has formed this way.
As above, for the sake of lovers and government, it will be beneficial to drop the genetic testing. So why should it be bothered to conduct such a waste?
                                                 Yours Sincerely,
                                                         Cahty
