The Chinese government has promised to increase the transparency of its military spending -- and report to the United Nations on a regular basis. Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Jiang Yu spoke to the press on Sunday about these developments.
Starting from this year -- China will report its military expenditure to the United Nations on an annual basis. The country would also provide requested data to the UN Register of Conventional Arms.
Jiang Yu said these two important decisions represent a significant step in enhancing the country's military transparency.
Jiang also said China had provided data on imports and exports of conventional arms, on an annual basis --since the establishment of the UN Register of Conventional Arms. But China was compelled to suspend its reporting in 1996. This was due to the fact that one country had provided data on its arms sales to Taiwan -- which China believes contradicted the objectives and principles of the Register.
Jiang Yu said China has decided to resume it own reporting -- since the country concerned has ceased providing such data regarding Taiwan.
The spokeswoman reiterated that the Chinese government has always taken a prudent and responsible attitude regarding its arms exports -- and also implemented strict controls on such exports.
She said China will continue to strive in coordination with the international community to promote international peace and security.
