the american translation theoriest, Eugene A. Nida, says in his book,The theory and Practice of Tranlation, that\" translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equavalent of the source language message, first in terms of meaning, and secondly in terms of style.\" would you think this attainable? if so , how close to the source text can your translation be? and if not, why not?

I think this is attainable. Nida is actually saying that translation should strive for functional as well as formal equivalence between the source text and the target text when he gives that argument. With regard to the problem of how close to the source text can a translation work be, I think the answer depends on many factors, including the form and the contents of the source text, and the ability of the translator, etc. if the source text contains culturally unique things and expressions like some set phrases and sayings in Chinese with allusions, then formal equivalence is almost impossible to achieve. In such case, functional equivalence becomes the priority and formal equivalence might be sacrificed as long as the meaning of the original can be conveyed in the target text. However, as for genres like business letters, whose forms are fixed in both Chinese and English, and literature, the form, the language style reflecting the language use characteristics of the author, is as important as, if not more important than, the contents of the work. Under such circumstances, not only functional equivalent but also formal equivalence should be taken into consideration. Generally speaking, as for most genres of English writings, especially practical writings, functional equivalence should take the priority, while for literature genres, formal equivalence should also be valued. However, if the translator is not proficient enough in translation strategies or the subject matter of the source text, neither functional nor formal equivalence will be achieved, concerning my own translation,  I think I do quite well in striving for functional equivalence because both my English and Chinese language abilities have been improved remarkably through years of quite professional training in the university and I can catch the meaning of texts in either language and convey it pretty accurately into texts in the other language. However, I still have a long way to go before my translation can achieve formal equivalence.

翻译与写作

Despite the fact that it has been carried out by generation after generation of people, translation has been deemed by quite a number of scholars and writers as a mission impossible. The German philologist, Wilhelm von Humboldt, described it as an attempt as solving an impossible task, and the American poet, Robert frost, poetry is what gets lost in translation. To what extent do you think translation is possible?

Generally speaking, there are universal things, like physical and psychological needs, mental process, feeling and moral standands, among all human beings in spite of their different races, skin colors, nationalities or ethic groups. This universality has provided the basis and driving forces for communication and mutual understanding among different people. Besides, there are similarities among different languages. For example, the smallest unit to express one’s idea is a sentence, which usually consists of subject, predicate, object, attribute and adverbial modifier, etc…the universality among languages and the universality among human beings mentioned above together constitute the basis  for translatability. However, despite the universality there are great differences in terms of both languages and human beings. Language difference die primarily in phonology, spelling, grammar and, most importantly, ways of expressing, habits of using language, including different word choice, different metaphors and different geographical regions have their unique experience, unique histories and unique life style, therefore, frequently, there Is no word or expression in the TL that corresponds exactly to a given word and expression in the SL. In other words, sometimes both the content to be expressed and ways of expressing may be different may be different from one speech community to another. Consequently, there must be some loss in the process of translating and translation can be regarded as an attempt to introduce culturally unique things from one未完

想咨询一下考上的前辈
翻译和写作这一科都是怎么考

会出理论性的问题吗,还是只是给些文章考察翻译实践呢?

另外那本给定的参考书--翻译问题探讨和旅游翻译 是以什么形式出题呢?

恳切希望得到指点,谢谢
