考研复试阶段的英语内容主要侧重听力和口语，一般由学校的公共英语或研究生公共英语教研室来考核。
良好的英语听说能力是复试成功的保证。复试中对英语的听说能力考查比较多，有时会涉及一些专业性的内容。导师也会比较在意考生们的英语水平。
对口语的考查，各个学校各不相同。有的学校制定了非常详细的标准和流程，甚至规定了每个老师发问的方式和时间；有的只是面试老师的自由发挥，成绩也基本上由面试老师主观判定，但是每年的考试过程中，有一些话题总是相同或相近的。
