These words all mean to agree, often unwillingly, that sth is true.


PATTERNS AND COLLOCATIONS

admit [ I ,  T ]  
to agree, often unwillingly, that sth is true
The appointment is now generally  admitted  to have been a mistake.
   This pattern is only used in the passive.
Don't be afraid to admit (to) your mistakes.  ◇  She stubbornly refuses to  admit  the truth.  ◇  They freely  admit  (that) they still have a lot to learn.  ◇  I couldn't admit to my parents that I was finding the course difficult.  ◇  It was generally  admitted  that the government had acted too quickly.  ◇  ‘I'm very nervous,’ she  admitted  reluctantly.

acknowledge [ T ] ( rather formal )  
to accept that sth exists, is true or has happened
Are you prepared to acknowledge your responsibility?

recognize  ( BrE  also   -ise ) [ T ]  
to admit or be aware that sth exists or is true
It was recognized that this solution could only be temporary.
►    recognition noun  [ sing. ,  U ]: There is general recognition of the urgent need for reform.

concede [ T ] ( rather formal )  
to admit, often unwillingly, that sth is true or logical
It must be conceded that different judges have different approaches to these cases.
NOTE   admit  or  concede?   
When sb  admits  sth, they are usually agreeing that sth which is generally considered bad or wrong is true or has happened, especially when it relates to their own actions. When sb  concedes  sth, they are usually accepting, unwillingly, that any particular fact or statement is true or logical.

confess [ T ,  I ] ( rather formal )  
to admit sth that you feel ashamed or embarrassed about
She was reluctant to confess her ignorance.  
I must confess to knowing nothing about computers.
( formal )   I confess myself  bewildered by their explanation.

grant [ T ]  
to admit that a statement or claim is true, usually while denying that a greater claim is also true
I'll grant you (that) it looks good, but it's not exactly practical.
  Grant  is most commonly used in the expressions  I/I'll grant you (that)…  and  Granted…  (at the beginning of a sentence). You often use  but  in the second part of a sentence containing  grant .
