请教【以解决】

最近在分析长难句。对下面的这个句子有些疑惑。望高手指点。

    As far as the third factor is concerned,the history of science shows many intances in which the force of authority has operated in such a manner as to build up an exceedingly powerful resistance to further investigation;in some cases centuries elapsed before this resistance was eventually broken down,as happened in cosmology,for example.

   最后这个as引导的是定语从句。那么as指代的是resistance,还是上句提到的这种现象，或是......?[s:10]

我觉得as 所指应该是前面一个分句
分号后面的句子翻译为: 例如，在一些案例中，阻力在最终消失前经历了数个世纪，就像曾经发生在宇宙论上的一样。

终于找到了：由as, which 引导的非限定性定语从句，as和which可代整个主句，相当于and this或and that。
应该是这条了，我还以为as不能代句子呢，看来我的定语从句学得不好啊！
