标题: 一个长难句翻译[已回复]
The chairman of the board pressed on me the unpleasant job of dismissing good workers the firm can no longer afford to employ.

译文：董事长硬将一项不落好的工作派给我，让我去解雇那些公司无力支付薪水的优秀员工。

疑问：最后一个词：employ是什么成分？飞加不可吗？不明白，请高人指点！谢谢！

一般来说，afford sth.
afford to do sth. 即afford to employ good workers

没有afford sb.的搭配

中间省略了引导词（that） the firm can no longer afford to employ ...

其实，从这个句子里可以学习到不少好词好句的。press on sb. sth. 把……强加在……；dismiss sb.=lay sb. off
解雇某人。 employ =hire =recruit 雇佣，这三个词都有雇佣的意思。

太客气了。我英语的学习刚刚入门。

回去查了一下字典。press on sb. sth. 还可以讲做： prss sth. on sb.
大致就相当于 impose sth. on sb.
