3他的教学开始于马塞诸塞州的一个技术学院，但是威廉.芮妮.哈勃吸引了他去了芝加哥的一所新大学，在这里他的任职时间长达整整一代人，学生在他的作文课上，觉得他是个及其不苟言笑的人，但是在他们的私下谈话中却充满支持和理解。
